Business is like art

B

I love being in business for myself. I haven’t had a boss in over 20 years and have never applied for a job since I was 12 years old. I’ve certainly never written a resume or submitted it anywhere.

I realize now, looking back at my story, that I seemed to break ever rule there was, and didn’t do anything in a conventional way. There are different ways of being successful in your own business, and I like to see myself as living proof of that.

Really, in the end, there is only 1 business rule I can think of:

You have to make money.

Otherwise it’s a hobby. But how much money you need to make is up to you.

As long as Rule #1 is followed, how you get there, how you create it, how much of it, well, that’s totally up to you.

Much like being an artist, there are infinite ways to create the art. I also see the same in business.

In my case, I’m the king of bootstrapping. I’ve never financed anything I’ve done with debt, taken an investor, or been accountable to anyone other than myself. My businesses grew at the pace I was able to grow them, by myself.

I also like working from home. Everything I’ve done or created, since the very beginning, was done at my own desk. I’m going to continue with that. When I contemplate what is next, one of the things I will continue to do is work from my own desk.

Sometimes when I read news stories about entrepreneurs raising millions of dollars through Venture Capital, I get a little envious, but then I bring myself back to earth by realizing I don’t want that. I also see a lot of it as a mirage, as most VC backed businesses fail.

I’ve always done whatever I want, when I want. I always did, and I still do, and I plan on continuing so in the future.

I’ll create my art as I desire, and how I desire to do it. It’s completely up to me.
