My Impossible Dream

M

Disclosure: Today’s article came about from asking myself these 2 writing prompts:

1) What do I need to hear most right now?

2) What scares me?

And then I was inspired to write about my Impossible Dream. I did a quick search of my blog and I see it’s never been written about before. So something in me has held back sharing it openly.

I’ve written in the past how a favorite question of mine for people is to ask what their Impossible Dream is, and quickly reveal to them how it sounds to me more like a “Probable Dream“. Usually it’s based around their income, the life they want for themselves, the lives they want to touch. All very doable.

I had challenged myself in the past to come up with something really “impossible”. There is literally no way I have in my power to make this happen. And yet, this impossible dream is what drives me every day.

Here goes, for the first time I’m going to share it publicly:

My Impossible Dream is for all of us to live in a “Star Trek” future.

I think a lot about the future that Star Trek shows, specifically the future shown in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I recently re-watched the series on Netflix. These are my takeaways:

Humanity has moved on from war and conflict. There is no poverty or scarcity. We are explorers. We live in a future where anything you want can be “replicated”. Any experience you want you can have on a “holodeck”. And yet, something gets these people up every day to be part of something. To be the best at what they do. Some aspire to be on the bridge crew of the flagship of Starfleet. Others are content to work in the “lower decks”, still a critical part of it, but in their own way.

The mission is of one of exploration. To learn. To connect with new worlds. To grow. To help those that need assistance.

In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gene Roddenberry was very deliberate that there would be no conflict amongst the crew. That humans had evolved beyond petty squabbles. The conflict was always external.

It’s a lovely vision. Of that type of connection.

When I say I’m in “The Chris Frolic Business”, I have 2 bottom lines:

Bottom Line 1: The money I need to thrive and be generous.
Bottom Line 2: Propagate new thinking and connection amongst humanity which will advance us to a “Star Trek” future.

Just like the crew of the Enterprise, I get up every day to do this work, to write these articles, to share my wisdom with all who want it, not because I have to, but for some other invisible reason.

I have so much hope and optimism for the future when I’m able to demonstrate for others what is possible. Once seen, it cannot be unseen. Whether that is from watching me model it, listening to one of my stories, attending one of my Zooms, participating in a program of mine, or creating a deep connection between 2 people and seeing what is possible from that place.

The connection between people that becomes possible, even through Zoom, with people all over the world, can be pretty amazing.

I used to create these types of experiences on the dance floor of my raves. But when the sun came up and the lights came on, it ended.

I feel like I’ve been dabbling in something that has grown far outside the dance floor and wrapped itself around the world.

And even now I have to check myself. Am I really talking about something “impossible” or is it in fact “probable” because I’m doing it already?

Let me restate it:

My “Probable Dream” is for all of us to live in a Star Trek future. This is accomplished by propagating new thinking and connection amongst humanity.

I was scared to speak this. Now I’m glad I did.

How can you play with your own “Impossible Dream”?
