Optimism in Stressful Times

O

As I write this it has just been announced that my kids’ school will be closed for weeks after March Break as a precaution against the COVID-19 virus. NBA season was cancelled, NHL season cancelled, Disney has closed its parks, large companies are sending their people to work from home, concerts are cancelled, corporate events, people are cancelling their vacations and travel plans.

At first it seems like an extremely panic-inducing situation.

But, I see such hope and optimism in this. We, humanity, are working together towards a common outcome. We’re all in this together. Taking these actions will protect both us, and everyone else.

We’re all working towards “Flattening the Curve”.

It’s beautifully summed up in this picture. If we work together now, we avoid the huge spike and overwhelming our hospitals.

I love that whomever came up with this curve graphic, they came up with a simple way to explain an abstract thought. It’s clear, we all get it now and can take action towards it.

By everyone cancelling together, we are working in a way unseen in human history.

And THAT gives me hope.

Not just regarding COVID-19, but against other huge issues humanity faces.

We are capable of this. We are doing it right now. Things may very well get worse before they get better but we’re all working towards making it better and not letting it get as bad as it could have gotten if everyone went on business as usual.

It doesn’t make the problems insignificant, and in fact the bigger the problems the more we have to work together.

We’re working together right now. That is amazing to witness.
